Regional Chicken Project 2016

— Written By

The Regional Chicken Project is an opportunity for youth to learn more about the livestock industry. Youth ages 5 to 18 involved in FFA or 4-H are encouraged to participate.

Through this project, youth will be able to purchase broiler birds or laying hens at a discounted rate. The birds will be raised and the youth will complete a project record book to record their knowledge and care of their chickens. In May, youth will participate in a Regional Chicken Show, where they will demonstrate their knowledge of the bird to a judge. Training for this will be provided through workshops or classes.

At the end of the project, youth will have the opportunity to donate their broilers to be processed for local food pantries or keep for their own processing. The hens can be kept to lay eggs for a potential business or the hens could be sold for profit. Participating counties include Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Hoke, Robeson, Sampson and Wayne.

Registration is due January 14, 2016!!!!
