Horse Judging Winners

There is more to the 4-H Horse Program than just riding and showing and it takes more than just saddle time to make an excellent equestrian. Nine 4-H members, including four FFA members from Currituck County spent the last month learning judging standards, information on different breeds and riding disciplines, studying the parts of the horse, developing a discerning eye and placing classes of horses, and learning to orally defend their decisions. These excellent equestrians participated in the state 4-H and FFA horse judging contests held on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Martin Community College in Williamston, NC.

Over 100 youths competed to determine who was the best judge of horses in nine different classes. The junior team of Carsyn Sawyer, Emerson Page, Poppy Wright, and Lia Suthers placed first in the state. Carsyn won highest scoring individual in the junior division while Emerson took second place honors. Poppy finished in seventh place overall. The senior team of Cayden Lowe, Haley Bisese, Amber Jones and Anna Talley took sixth place overall in the senior 4-H division and second place overall in the senior FFA division. Sori Suthers took third place overall individual in the senior rookie division. It was the first time any of these youths had participated in this contest.

Congratulations to all of these award winners. For more information on this contest or other 4-H youth equestrian events, contact Tom Harrell at Tom_Harrell@ncsu.edu or call the Currituck Extension Center at 252-232-2261.
