Collapse ▲December’s plant spotlight is poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima). Poinsettias are a popular plant during the Christmas holidays. You can find them in a wide range of colors: reds, pinks, marbles, and whites.
When buying poinsettias, choose ones in full color with fully expanded bracts. The bracts are the colorful leaves (the true flowers are the small yellow ones in the middle). Do not purchase a poinsettia that shows sign of wilt.
Poinsettias are a very common site during the Christmas holidays.
After getting home, place your poinsettia in the sunniest location of a room. Poinsettias are best at temperatures between 50°F and 70°F. Avoid placing the poinsettia near cold drafts or areas that generate excess heat. Water the plant thoroughly when the soil completely dries out.
If the poinsettia has a foil wrapper, make sure it’s not preventing water from draining freely to avoid drowning the plant. You can either remove the foil or punch holes in the bottom and set the plant in a container to catch excess water.
Poinsettias are great for brightening up our homes, churches, and businesses during the holidays. By following these simple care tips, you’ll ensure your plant remains vibrant and add festive cheer to your home all season long.
