May Day Celebration at the WBG
May Day was rooted in agriculture and springtime song and dance hailed the sown fields starting to sprout. Once upon a time, the first day of May evoked good tidings and sweet little gifts
for loved ones and neighbors.
Perhaps the sweet little tradition
of giving a May basket or dancing around the May Pole to celebrate
Spring is ready for a reboot!
Regardless of how you celebrate, flowers have remained a symbol of spring celebration!
Come to the Wilson Botanical Gardens to celebrate May Day and enjoy the gardens starting to show their colorful blooms.
Be sure to stop in the Children’s Secret Garden at the Vollis Simpson Whirligig
decorated as a May Pole for photo opts!
There are craft ideas hung on the May Pole that you can make at home. So get your most colorful clothes on and come celebrate May Day at the Wilson Botanical Gardens!
Suggestions for celebrating:
-Make a May Day flower crown from vines woven or tied together then add some flowers and ribbons.
-Make a May Day basket for a neighbor complete with flower seeds to plant and garden gloves.
-Make a May Day colorful cone from scrapbook paper or construction paper, fill with flowers or sweet treats along with ribbons and a Happy May Day tag attached.
-Make a colorful wand with ribbons tied to it and dance around the May Pole for a photo to post on the Wilson Botanical Gardens Facebook page!
Flowers planted in your own garden are always a reason to celebrate with a springtime smile.
Happy May Day!
